SHEEP AT WEZENSPYK

Sample the typical taste of Texel in the sheep’s cheese! Due to the ever-present sea breeze and dry, salty grass, the milk and thus the sheep’s cheese retains its authentic flavor. Our sheep’s cheese is made according to the old recipe and still carries the quality mark for cheese made on Texel for over four hundred years. In fact, sheep’s cheese is Texel’s oldest export product. Wondering how that tastes? You can find the full range in our web store!

THE ORIGIN OF THE TEXEL SHEEP

Sheep and the island of Texel are inextricably linked. In fact, more sheep inhabit Texel than people! This is due to the fact that originally, the soil on Texel was not adequate and therefore unsuitable for grazing cows. The Texel sheep, however, have no issues with the shorter grass.

THE CHARACTERISTIC SHEEP’S CHEESE

Sheep’s cheese from Texel sports a characteristic and unique flavor: zingy, slightly drier and salty. Wezenspyk features plenty of sheep, as well as lambs during some months out of the year. When the sheep are ready to be milked, they move to a farm between Den Burg and Oudeschild.

WALKING PATH

From Wezenspyk, you can walk the ‘Skéép en Lantskap’ (sheep and landscape) path. This trail starts at the farm and is around three kilometers long, winding past the Wezenspyk polder and dyke. On the way, you’ll come across a draw ferry across the canal. This short round trip is part of one of Skéép en Lantskap’s longer walking trails.
